Texas Tamale Pie is a delicious and hearty dish that combines the flavors of tamales with a savory meat filling, topped with a cornbread crust.

- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained
- 1 can (4 oz) diced green chilies
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the meat is cooked through.
- Add the tomato sauce, kidney beans, green chilies, chili powder, and cumin to the skillet. Stir to combine and let simmer for 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix the cornmeal, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and baking powder until smooth.
- Spread the meat mixture in a greased baking dish.
- Pour the cornmeal mixture over the meat layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the cornbread is golden brown.
- If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese on top and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to melt the cheese.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add jalapeños to the meat mixture.
- This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
- Serve with sour cream or guacamole for added flavor.
